Seoul or Busan?

Seoul runs the widest set of city-center winter programs: two separate large-scale light shows (DDP and Gwanghwamun), the Seoul Lantern Festival along Cheonggyecheon, the Hangang River Festival Winter program, plus Myeongdong's Christmas market and skating rink. Busan runs its own set a short KTX ride away: the Haeundae Light Festival, the Gwangbok-ro Winter Light Tree Festival, and the Gwangalli waterfront's drone show. If you only have one city, decide by trip length: Seoul's cluster is dense enough to cover on foot and subway over one evening, while Busan's three areas (Haeundae, Nampo/Gwangbok-ro, Gwangalli) are spread further apart.

Light festivals & media art

Seoul Light DDP and Seoul Light Gwanghwamun are separate media-art shows a short subway ride apart, typically running mid-December through early January with free outdoor viewing. Busan's Haeundae and Gwangbok-ro light festivals follow a similar free-outdoor pattern, historically running from late November or early December into January or February. Christmas markets & ice skating

Myeongdong and City Hall Plaza host Seoul's best-known winter street decorations and an outdoor skating rink each December, alongside Lotte World's indoor rink as a weather-proof backup. These typically run through late February and don't require the same date-by-date tracking as the light festivals, since the rinks stay open for the whole season once they start.

New Year's Eve

The Bosingak Bell-Ringing Ceremony in Jongno is Seoul's signature New Year's countdown, drawing large crowds and triggering temporary subway service extensions and street closures around the venue. Seoul's winter light festivals typically add their own countdown programming on December 31, and several regions run New Year's sunrise-viewing events separately from the city countdowns — check a specific destination's own page for crowd-control and transport details before committing to a countdown-night plan.

Ski resorts & snow

Vivaldi Park and Elysian Gangchon are the closest ski resorts to Seoul, both reachable as a day trip by shuttle bus, and High1 Resort in Jeongseon adds a casino and gondola for a longer stay. Taebaeksan's snow flower festival is a separate, hiking-based winter event rather than a ski resort, centered on frost-covered ridge trails rather than lift-served slopes. Resort opening dates depend on snowfall and artificial-snow readiness, so confirm each resort's season-opening announcement before booking transport.
