After Your Treatment: Alcohol, Sun, Jjimjilbang and Travel Etiquette

A few ordinary travel activities can interfere with healing right after a treatment -- know which ones to skip and for how long.

Tip: Ask your provider for a written list of what to avoid and for how long -- "no alcohol for a few days" means something different after a light peel than after an injectable treatment, and the specific number of days matters.

Why alcohol is commonly restricted after treatment

Alcohol can thin the blood and increase swelling or bruising, which is exactly the opposite of what recently treated skin or tissue needs while it heals. This is one of the most consistent restrictions across injectable and laser treatments, and it's worth planning around deliberately if your itinerary includes evenings out with friends or a group dinner with soju and beer, since "just one drink" can still work against your recovery in the first days after treatment.

Why jjimjilbang heat and direct sun are also on the list

Korean jjimjilbang and public bathhouses involve sustained heat exposure, which can worsen swelling and, for some treatments, isn't recommended in the days right after a procedure -- so a jjimjilbang visit planned for the same trip may need to move to before your treatment, or later in your stay, not right after. Direct sun exposure is another common restriction, particularly after laser treatments and chemical peels, since freshly treated skin can be more sensitive to UV damage and pigmentation issues than usual.

Building these restrictions into your itinerary

  • Schedule any jjimjilbang, sauna or spa day for before your treatment, or plan for it later in a longer trip once your provider clears you.
  • If your treatment is early in the trip, plan lower-key evening activities for the first few days rather than nights that revolve around drinking.
  • Pack a wide-brimmed hat and high-SPF sunscreen regardless of treatment, and check with your provider about sun exposure specifically if you've had any laser or peel treatment.
  • Ask specifically how these restrictions apply to your treatment, since timelines genuinely differ by procedure type and individual healing.
