1. How Korea medical and skincare tourism works
Gangnam
The broadest clinic concentration and English-facing booking channels. Compare branch identity, doctor involvement, and package exclusions.
Myeongdong
Convenient for short-stay travelers and multilingual retail corridors. Confirm whether the consultation and procedure happen at the same branch.
Hongdae
Younger, accessible clinic market with late hours at some providers. Never infer safety or credentials from social-media popularity alone.
Request a written quote showing the procedure name, product or device, units or shots, anesthesia, disposables, aftercare, prescription costs, and VAT. Ask whether the advertised price is restricted to residents, first-time patients, specific time slots, or app-only reservations. A clinic should obtain informed consent; a translator or coordinator does not replace the treating doctor's explanation.
2. Medical-procedure VAT refund: the 2026 rule
This is different from the tourist tax-refund system for eligible retail goods. Cosmetics or other goods bought separately from a participating retailer may follow retail rules, but a medical service is not converted into a retail purchase by issuing an ordinary receipt. Incheon Airport still operates tax-refund kiosks for valid refund records; scanning a passport cannot revive an ineligible 2026 medical claim.
| Payment | 2026 treatment | What to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Aesthetic medical procedure | No former medical-tourism VAT special refund | “Is this the final VAT-inclusive total?” |
| Eligible retail skincare goods | Retail refund may apply at a participating seller | Ask before payment and follow the operator receipt |
| Airport kiosk | Processes approved refund records only | Use the operator instructions printed on the valid document |
3. Factory-style vs. one-to-one private clinics
High-volume network
Pros: lower advertised prices, standardized menus, faster appointments. Risks: shorter consultations, rotating doctors, upselling, and add-ons not obvious in the headline price.
Private / doctor-led
Pros: more time for individualized assessment and continuity. Risks: higher price and limited appointment capacity; “private” is not itself a credential.
Booking safely
Use the clinic's official WhatsApp, LINE, website, or English desk. Save the branch name, cancellation policy, deposit terms, and written quote. Walk-ins are never guaranteed.
4. Essential clinic phrases: listen, copy, or show
Tap the screen button for a high-contrast card. Audio uses your device's Korean text-to-speech voice when available.
5. Post-treatment pharmacy aftercare
Follow the treating clinic's written instructions before buying anything. Do not apply antibiotic ointment, regeneration cream, powder, acids, retinoids, or occlusive patches to a procedure site unless the clinician or pharmacist confirms they are appropriate. Seek urgent help for breathing trouble, vision change, rapidly worsening swelling, severe pain, fever, pus, or widespread hives.
