Two branches, two very different visits

The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA) operates multiple branches, but visitors comparing options usually mean Seoul (near Gyeongbokgung, in a renovated former military hospital site) and Gwacheon (a larger campus south of the city, near Seoul Grand Park). MMCA Seoul focuses on rotating contemporary exhibitions and is built into the historic Sogyeok-dong neighborhood, making it easy to combine with a palace visit. MMCA Gwacheon is the larger original campus, holding more of the museum's permanent collection alongside an outdoor sculpture park set into a hillside.

Getting to each branch

  • MMCA Seoul: walkable from Anguk Station (Line 3), making it easy to pair with Gyeongbokgung, Bukchon Hanok Village or Insadong on the same day.
  • MMCA Gwacheon: reached via Seoul Grand Park Station (Line 4) plus a shuttle or a walk through the park -- plan closer to a half-day trip than a quick add-on.
  • A combined ticket or discount sometimes applies across branches -- check current pricing on the official site before assuming.

Which branch fits your itinerary

If you have limited time and are already exploring central Seoul's palace district, MMCA Seoul is the practical choice. If you have a full day free and want a slower, greener museum experience with the sculpture park, Gwacheon is worth the trip out.

  1. Pair MMCA Seoul with a same-day Gyeongbokgung or Bukchon visit since they're within walking distance of each other.
  2. Treat MMCA Gwacheon as its own half-day trip rather than a stop squeezed between other plans.
  3. Check the current special-exhibition schedule online, since the headline show driving a visit often runs at only one branch at a time.
