Fast rule: choose the app payment option shown as available on your device, but keep a physical Visa or Mastercard and some cash as backup. For an ordinary Seoul sedan taxi, the official late-night surcharge is 20% from 10–11 PM, 40% from 11 PM–2 AM, and 20% from 2–4 AM.

Kakao T, Uber and payment choices

Kakao T is the dominant local dispatch app, while Uber provides an interface many international visitors already know. Available payment methods can differ by app version, account country, taxi product, and card issuer. If Kakao T offers Pay to Driver, select it when an overseas card cannot be registered, then pay the metered fare in the taxi by physical card, T-money where accepted, or cash. Never assume an app authorization means every foreign card will settle successfully. Confirm the payment label before requesting and keep a screenshot of the vehicle number.

Calculate the official late-night surcharge

Seoul’s standard sedan meter applies 20% from 10–11 PM, 40% from 11 PM–2 AM, and 20% from 2–4 AM. An out-of-city surcharge may also apply, and tolls are separate legitimate charges. Deluxe, van, international, and branded app taxis can use different reported or fixed plans, so read the product fare before confirming. Use the estimator below for planning, not as a quoted fare.

Prevent refusal and overcharging

  1. Enter or show a Korean road-name address and confirm the destination before departure.
  2. For a normal metered taxi, check that the meter starts; reject an unexplained cash-only flat price.
  3. Ask for a receipt and keep the vehicle number, pickup time, route screenshot, and payment record.
  4. If a fare appears unfair, scan the taxi complaint QR where provided or contact Seoul’s Dasan Call Center at 120 (from some phones, 02-120). Do not confront a driver in an unsafe location.
