Riding Seoul Subway Line 2 as a Sightseeing Loop

Line 2 is the only fully circular line in the system, which makes it the easiest one to sightsee along without doubling back.

Tip: Line 2 is one of the most crowded lines at rush hour (roughly 8-9:30am and 6-8pm). Time a leisurely loop day for late morning to mid-afternoon instead.

How the Line 2 loop actually works

Line 2 (green) runs as a closed circle through central Seoul, plus two short branch lines toward Sinseoldong and Kkachisan that don't affect the main ring. Trains run in two directions around the same loop: "inner circle" (내선순환, generally clockwise) and "outer circle" (외선순환, generally counter-clockwise). Screens and announcements name the next major station rather than a compass direction, so check the platform sign for the direction that reaches your next stop without a transfer.

Because it's a loop, there's no "end of the line" -- if you board the wrong direction you can simply go the long way around rather than needing to backtrack through a transfer.

Stations worth building a stop around

  • Hongik Univ. Station: Hongdae's nightlife, street art and indie shopping streets.
  • Ewha Womans Univ. Station: the sloped campus-front shopping street and cafes.
  • Euljiro 3(sam)-ga: printing-district alleys turned bar and cafe scene.
  • Seongsu Station: converted warehouse cafes, flagship K-brand stores and Seoul Forest access.
  • Gangnam / Sinsa (via Line 3 transfer at Gangnam) / Hongdae to Gangnam span: covers the modern shopping core of southern Seoul.

Planning a one-day loop

  1. Pick 3-4 stations from the list above rather than trying to exit at every stop -- the full loop takes over an hour end to end without stops.
  2. Buy a T-money card or use the Seoul Climate Card if you're staying several days, since Line 2 alone will rack up several separate fares in a loop day.
  3. Save each stop's exit number in a maps app in advance -- Line 2 stations are large and the wrong exit can add a 10-minute walk.
