Does Google Maps work in Korea?
Why the answer is not simply yes or no
A visitor may successfully find a hotel, restaurant or landmark in Google Maps and conclude that every navigation feature will behave exactly as it does at home. Another visitor may encounter a missing walking route, an outdated entrance or a business with a different English spelling and conclude that the app is useless. Both conclusions are too broad.
Google’s own Maps help says directions and transport modes depend on availability, and that public-transit routing requires information from the relevant local agency. Korea Tourism Organization’s current visitor material specifically presents NAVER Map as a route-finding app for Korea and says it supports English, Japanese and Simplified Chinese. The practical choice is therefore a two-map workflow, not a brand argument.

Install and test NAVER Map before landing
Korea Tourism Organization lists NAVER Map for route finding and identifies multilingual support. Install it through the official app store, switch to your preferred supported language and test a route while you still have reliable Wi-Fi. Do not wait until you are outside an airport terminal with luggage and low battery.
Language support does not guarantee that every business name, menu or user review is translated. Search again with the Korean name when an English result is missing. Your hotel or booking confirmation is often the safest source for the exact Korean road address.
Save identity, not just a pin

- branch name, floor and building
- nearest subway exit or bus stop
- official phone number or website
Many navigation failures are identity failures. A chain café, clinic or hotel may have several nearby branches. A translated nickname can point to a neighborhood instead of the entrance. Compare the map result with the official address before starting the route.
Resolve conflicting place pins
When two maps show different pins, compare the Korean road address, branch name, phone number and official website. Do not choose the result with more English reviews by default. For a temporary pop-up or event, the organizer's current venue notice should control; for a hotel or shop, use the operator's current address and entrance instructions.
Save a screenshot that includes nearby roads or a station exit, not only a floating pin. A driver or staff member can work with a Korean address and landmark more reliably than a cropped map with no place identity.
Check the last 100 meters separately
A route ending at the correct building does not guarantee the correct door. Korean stations can have many exits, underground malls can connect several buildings and a large complex can have different entrances after closing time. Read the destination’s arrival instructions, then compare the exit number and building name with physical signs.
For a hotel, save the reception entrance rather than only the center of the property. For a concert or stadium, use the organizer’s gate notice. For an airport, verify the terminal before following any route.
Prepare taxi and walking versions separately
A pedestrian entrance can sit on an alley that vehicles cannot reach, while a taxi drop-off may be on the opposite side of a complex. Save the Korean road address and vehicle entrance for a taxi, then the gate, floor or unit for the final walk. Confirm the pickup pin before requesting a car so the driver is not routed across a divided road or restricted gate.
For subway travel, record the station name, line, direction and exit. An exit number is useful only when the exit is open and accessible for your luggage or mobility needs; check lifts and temporary closures against current station information.
Use current transit information for the actual departure
Rerun the route for the real date and time. The last train, a short-turn service, a temporary bus stop or a closed station exit can change the usable journey. Platform displays, operator notices and staff instructions outrank a screenshot saved earlier.
If two apps disagree, do not average the answers. Check the station name, direction, final destination and transfer time, then use the current local display or operator information. Leave a buffer when the fallback would be an expensive taxi.
Keep an offline arrival card
In one offline note, store the accommodation's Korean name, road address, reception phone number, nearest station and exit, and a screenshot of the final approach. Add one alternate route and the official taxi-rank option for a late arrival. Avoid including door codes, passport details or card information in a note you may show to a stranger.
If data fails, use airport or station Wi-Fi only long enough to restore the official route, then verify the destination before moving. Do not follow an old offline screenshot when construction, weather or operating hours have changed the safe path.
A ten-minute setup that prevents most problems
- Install Google Maps and NAVER Map from their official stores.
- Enable the language you can read in NAVER Map.
- Save your accommodation in both apps.
- Copy its Korean name and road address into an offline note.
- Test the airport-to-hotel route and one walking route.
- Save the nearest station exit and reception phone number.
- Keep enough battery and a mobile-data fallback for arrival.
