Korea hotel check-in for foreign travelers

Your check-in packet
- Property name in English and Korean, exact branch and road address.
- Lead guest name, reservation number, stay dates and number of guests.
- Room and bed type, included meals and the amount already paid.
- Reception hours, late-arrival instructions and a verified contact channel.
- Passport, accepted payment method and any deposit information shown in the booking.
Save this packet offline before boarding. Keep passport and card images out of ordinary chat messages; the packet should contain references and confirmations, not reusable identity credentials.
Match the reservation name
Use the lead guest’s name as shown on the booking and make sure companions are included when required. A nickname, reversed name order or booking made for another traveler can slow check-in. Save the confirmation offline because airport data, roaming or Wi-Fi may fail. If an agent or friend booked for you, ask the property in advance what authorization it requires.
Reconcile the booking before arrival
Read the final confirmation, not only the search result. Match the property branch, dates, number of guests, room and bed type, cancellation status, included meals and total payment due. If two rooms were booked, record which guest name belongs to each reservation. Ask the property to confirm any message that changes the payment method, bank account or check-in location.
Keep the booking platform confirmation and the property's written reply in the same offline folder. A screenshot should show the reservation number and terms but should not be posted publicly with a door code, passport number or full card details.

Passport, address and contact details
An accommodation may ask to see identification under its operating and guest-registration procedures. Keep control of your original passport and ask why any copy is needed; do not send passport images through an unofficial social account. Korea’s official e-Arrival Card guidance also asks travelers to prepare the address and contact information of their residence or accommodation. Copy these details from the property or booking platform rather than guessing a neighborhood.
Late arrival needs confirmation
“24-hour building access” is not the same as a staffed front desk. Small hotels, guesthouses, pensions and self-check-in properties may have a last check-in time, door code or unmanned kiosk. Send your arrival estimate in Korea Standard Time, include your reservation number and ask for written instructions. Do not assume a delayed flight automatically preserves the room.
Deposits and payment surprises
Check whether the booking is prepaid, pay-at-property or only card-guaranteed. A property may request a security deposit or a different card for incidentals. Foreign cards can fail because of issuer controls or terminal settings, so carry a backup card and a modest won reserve. Ask for a receipt and confirm when a deposit hold or cash deposit will be released.
Separate the room charge from the deposit
Ask the desk to identify the unpaid room balance, taxes or fees, and refundable security hold separately. A card authorization can reduce available credit without becoming a final charge. Record the amount, currency, payment card and expected release process. For a cash deposit, obtain a receipt that states the amount and return conditions.
At checkout, ask whether the hold was released or a final charge was submitted. Retain the folio until the bank record settles. Do not hand over a card photo or one-time verification code through an unsolicited message to “confirm” a deposit.
Inspect before settling in
Confirm room type, bed count, bathroom arrangement, window, smoking status and included services. Photograph serious pre-existing damage and report it promptly. Ask how air conditioning, floor heating, hot water and door locks work. For capsule hotels, goshiwons, hanok stays and jjimjilbangs, use the dedicated guides because privacy, luggage and overnight rules differ sharply.
Verify self-check-in instructions
Treat a door code, lockbox message or kiosk instruction as sensitive. Confirm that it came through the booking platform, the property's verified number or its official email. Check which entrance to use, whether the elevator needs a key, where to collect the room key and how to reach a person after hours. A map pin at the building is not enough when several accommodations share one address.
If a kiosk asks for a booking code, passport scan or payment, compare the property name and amount with the reservation before continuing. Photograph the successful check-in screen and keep the support number accessible outside the locked entrance.
Confirm deliveries, visitors and luggage rules
Ask where food and parcel riders should meet you, whether the front desk accepts packages, and what name must appear on the order. Do not use the hotel telephone number as your own verified identity without permission. Confirm visitor, quiet-hour and extra-guest rules before inviting anyone to the room; occupancy changes can affect safety records and charges.
For luggage storage, obtain a claim tag and ask about opening hours, valuables and collection after checkout. Keep passports, medication, electronics and irreplaceable items with you unless the property explicitly accepts responsibility for them.
Resolve a room mismatch in the right order
- Compare the room with the written booking: dates, occupancy, bed type and included services.
- Take clear photos of a material mismatch or damage before using the room.
- Contact the front desk and request a specific remedy.
- If unresolved, message the booking platform inside its official channel so the timeline is recorded.
- Do not cancel or relocate until you understand refund terms, unless immediate safety requires leaving.
Set up checkout on the first night
Confirm checkout time, key return, luggage storage and any early-departure procedure. Ask whether late checkout is available rather than assuming. Review breakfast hours, housekeeping requests and waste or towel rules at self-service properties. Before departure, check drawers, outlets, the safe and bathroom, then retain the final receipt and deposit-release record.
