Why the mosque area matters
Seoul Central Mosque in Itaewon has anchored a small halal food district around it for decades, with restaurants -- many Turkish, Pakistani, Malaysian and Middle Eastern -- clustered on the streets leading up to the mosque. This concentration makes it the most reliable single area in Seoul to find multiple halal options within a short walk, rather than searching city-wide for individual restaurants.
Certified halal vs Muslim-friendly
- Certified halal means a recognized certification body has verified the restaurant's sourcing and preparation meet halal standards -- look for a certificate displayed at the entrance or ask directly.
- Muslim-friendly is a looser, self-described label -- it may mean no pork and no alcohol in cooking, but without third-party certification of the full supply chain, including cross-contamination controls.
- If certification matters to you, ask specifically "is this certified halal, or Muslim-friendly?" -- staff at genuinely certified restaurants are used to this question and will answer clearly.
Finding a restaurant
- Walk the main street leading from Itaewon station up toward the mosque -- most of the area's halal restaurants are along this stretch and the side streets branching off it.
- Search "halal" directly in a map app set to English; several restaurants list their certification status in their profile.
- Beyond Itaewon, a smaller number of certified halal restaurants exist near university areas and other neighborhoods with international communities -- but Itaewon remains the most walkable concentration.
- Friday around midday is the busiest time in the immediate mosque area, since it coincides with congregational prayer -- expect fuller restaurants and plan a little extra time if you're visiting then.
If you can't confirm certification on the spot, ordering vegetarian dishes at a general restaurant is a reasonable fallback, but it isn't a substitute for a genuinely halal-certified meal if that's what you specifically need -- the certified restaurants clustered near the mosque remain the most dependable option for that.
