A vegetable-looking dish may use animal ingredients

Soup, stew, kimchi, sauces and side dishes may use anchovy or meat broth, fish sauce, shrimp paste, egg or other animal ingredients. Vegetable gimbap can still contain egg, ham or imitation crab. Ask about the broth and seasoning, not only the visible topping.

Distinguish four KTO restaurant categories

Korea Tourism Organization separates listings into Halal Certified, Self-certified, Muslim Friendly and Pork Free. “Muslim Friendly” can mean only some halal dishes are offered and alcohol may be sold. “Pork Free” does not mean a halal menu. Check the current category, pictograms, reservation requirement and alcohol or shared-kitchen policy for the exact restaurant.

Temple food can help, but verify the specific kitchen

Traditional Korean temple cuisine commonly avoids meat and five pungent vegetables, and it can be a useful vegetarian option. Do not label every restaurant near a temple or every “temple-style” menu automatically vegan, allergen-free or halal. Confirm the actual ingredients and shared preparation.

Show separate questions instead of one broad label

• Does this contain meat, seafood, egg or dairy?
• Does the broth contain anchovy, beef or chicken?
• Does this contain pork derivatives such as lard, gelatin or processed meat?
• Is a halal-certified menu available, and must it be reserved?
• Can the kitchen avoid shared oil or utensils if that is required?

Save the questions in Korean and show them before ordering. If staff cannot verify a critical restriction, choose a packaged item with a readable ingredient label or a restaurant whose current certification matches your needs.
