Why this line matters

Before this KTX line opened for the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, reaching Korea's east coast from Seoul meant a multi-hour bus or slow-train journey over mountainous terrain. The Gangneung Line cut that travel time dramatically, turning what was once a genuine multi-day trip commitment into an easy same-day or overnight option from the capital.

Pyeongchang and Gangneung as destinations

• Pyeongchang, the former Olympic host, offers ski resorts in winter and cooler mountain scenery in summer, a genuine change of pace from Seoul's climate.
• Gangneung, the line's terminus, is an east coast city known for its beaches, coffee culture (it has its own noted specialty coffee scene), and coastal seafood.
• Both cities work well as either a quick day trip or a more relaxed overnight stay, depending on how much time you have.

Day-trip feasibility from Seoul

The fastest KTX trains cover the Seoul-to-Gangneung distance in roughly two hours, making a full day trip -- beach or coffee shop time in Gangneung, then back to Seoul the same evening -- genuinely comfortable rather than rushed. Checking the return train schedule before you leave in the morning is worth doing, since evening departures can be less frequent than the morning outbound schedule.

The Gangneung Line was significantly expanded ahead of the 2018 Winter Olympics, cutting what was once a multi-hour journey to the east coast down to roughly two hours from Seoul, which reshaped how accessible Gangwon-do's coastline and mountains became for a day trip.
