How to book KTX tickets in Korea as a foreign visitor

Published August 22, 2026 · Reviewed August 27, 2026 · Timetables and sale rules can change

Key Takeaways
✅ 2026 Fact-Checked

KTX tickets are generally released 30 days before departure. Cancellation fees vary by timing: same-day changes can start around KRW 400 or reach 10% near departure, and refunds may be unavailable within five minutes of departure.

Check the live ticket conditions before payment. If companions may change plans separately, book separately because tickets bought together may not support an individual partial refund.

Book the train, station and passenger—not only the city pair. KORAIL+ now sells the KTX-SRT integrated services that begin September 1, 2026. August travel and legacy reservations can still follow the earlier split channels, so confirm the exact train in the live official booking route.

KTX, SRT or conventional train?

Do not assume “Seoul” always means Seoul Station. Honam-line trains may use Yongsan, east-coast services may depart Cheongnyangni, and SRT uses Suseo. Calculate the trip from your accommodation to the actual departure station.

Start with the correct station pair

Search the Korean and English names of both stations and compare their map locations. Some cities have a high-speed station outside the central district, while another station with the city name may serve different trains. Include the transfer from the arrival station to the final hotel or attraction when comparing options.

For Seoul departures, allow enough time to reach Seoul, Yongsan, Cheongnyangni or Suseo rather than treating them as interchangeable. A cheaper or faster train can lose its advantage if the departure station requires a long cross-city transfer.

Official booking order

  1. Open the official KORAIL multilingual site or KORAIL+ app.
  2. Select the exact departure and arrival stations, travel date and passenger count.
  3. Compare departure station, train number, duration and arrival station.
  4. Choose a seat when the booking channel offers seat selection.
  5. Pay and save the ticket, train number, carriage and seat offline.
September 2026 transition: The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport says KORAIL+ launched on August 3. Tickets for KTX-SRT integrated trains operating from September 1 went on sale through KORAIL+ and the KORAIL website on August 5 at 10:00 KST. For trains operating in August, the official notice kept KTX in KORAIL channels and SRT in the SRT app. Check the operating date before choosing a channel.
2026 Chuseok booking alert: VISITKOREA lists the public-holiday period as September 24–26, with Chuseok on September 25. KORAIL's special sale covers trains operating September 23–27 and requires a KORAIL integrated membership. Eligible priority passengers can book September 3–4 from 09:00 to 15:00 KST; general sales run September 7–11 from 07:00 to 13:00 KST on different route and train-group days. Payment opens September 12 at 00:00 KST. General-sale bookings must be paid by September 15 and priority-sale bookings by September 18 or they are automatically cancelled. Use the live holiday-sale page to match your route to its exact sale day before joining the queue.

VISITKOREA's August 2026 train page says tickets are generally sold from about one month before departure, with the precise opening and cutoff depending on channel. Holiday periods can use special sales arrangements, so the operator announcement controls.

Validate the ticket after payment

Do this before closing the browser or app. A card authorization without an issued booking requires investigation; do not immediately buy the same itinerary again without checking order history.

Using a foreign card

Korea Tourism Organization's 2026 transport guide says foreign-issued cards are accepted at ticket machines and counters for KTX, SRT and AREX. Online payment can still fail because of card authentication, issuer controls or name formatting. If one careful attempt fails, try another card or use an official station channel rather than an unfamiliar reseller.

A payment alert is not the same as a valid ticket. Confirm that the booking shows a train number, date, carriage and seat or standing status. Keep records if a charge remains pending after a failed booking.

When plans change

Review the official cancellation and change conditions attached to the ticket before modifying it. A new train selection is not complete until the old booking and any refund are accounted for. If the app or website cannot resolve the change, use an official station counter with the booking record and payment card available.

Do not assume a ticket for one train permits boarding another service. Integration does not make train numbers, departure stations, inventory or ticket conditions interchangeable.

What to do when the train is sold out

Check nearby times, a different official departure station or a conventional train. Do not board a reserved train without a valid ticket. Standing tickets and combined seat/standing products depend on the service and availability. A social-media resale screenshot is not a substitute for an official ticket.

Should you buy KORAIL PASS?

The pass is designed for international travelers and can be useful for multiple eligible KORAIL journeys during the selected period. Current VISITKOREA guidance describes flexible multi-day options, standard-class use and limited daily seat reservations. Because the September integration changes booking and operations, do not infer pass eligibility from the train brand alone; check the live pass terms for the exact service before paying.

Compare the pass price with the actual point-to-point tickets you intend to take. A pass does not guarantee that your preferred train has an available seat. KORAIL PASS+ adds a separate prepaid transit and payment-card function and requires pickup and top-up steps; it is not automatically better for a simple return journey.

Build a luggage plan

Pack so that passports, medication, valuables and the ticket remain with you. Large luggage space can be limited and is not a private reserved locker. Arrive early enough to find the carriage position and store bags without blocking aisles, doors or emergency equipment. For storage before or after the ride, use the Seoul luggage-storage guide.

KTX Final Departures Notice

Seoul-to-Busan KTX departures commonly finish around 22:30–23:00, but the exact final train changes by date and operating plan. Standard intercity rail service is generally unavailable after the final departure until roughly 05:00 the next morning. Search the live KORAIL timetable for your exact date and station pair before committing to a late connection.

If you miss the train

  1. Do not board a different reserved train without an official ticket.
  2. Check the booking conditions and approach an official counter or channel.
  3. Ask about the next available eligible service and any required new fare.
  4. Notify the accommodation or connection provider if the arrival changes.
  5. Keep the original ticket and payment record until the case is resolved.
