Why the Express Bus Terminal is really two buildings
Seoul Express Bus Terminal is split into the Gyeongbu Line Terminal and the Honam Line Terminal, operated separately and sitting on opposite sides of the same intersection above Express Bus Terminal Station. Gyeongbu Line services generally run southeast toward cities like Busan, Daegu and Gyeongju, while Honam Line services run southwest toward Gwangju, Jeonju and the southwestern coast. Buying a ticket for the wrong building's destination list is the single most common mix-up here, since both buildings look similar from outside.
Finding the right building before you buy
- Check your destination against Gyeongbu (southeast Korea) or Honam (southwest Korea) routing before leaving your hotel, since this determines which building's ticket counter you need.
- Follow signage inside Express Bus Terminal Station -- both buildings are marked from the subway concourse, but the walk between them is several minutes outdoors.
- If unsure, ask station staff which building serves your destination city rather than guessing from the building's exterior.
Once you're inside the right building
Both buildings have ticket counters, self-service kiosks and posted departure boards, but English signage is more limited than at Incheon Airport.
- Use a kiosk with an English-language option if the ticket counter line is long -- most major routes are bookable this way.
- Confirm your platform number on the departure board shortly before boarding, since gate assignments can shift.
- Arrive at least 20-30 minutes early for popular weekend routes, which can sell out closer to departure.
Both buildings also connect directly to the Goto Mall underground shopping arcade, which runs between them beneath the intersection -- useful as a weatherproof shortcut if you'd rather not walk outside between the two terminals. Keep your ticket handy through the walk, since staff at either building may ask to confirm your destination matches the terminal you're standing in.
