Recognize three favorites

• Bungeoppang: fish-shaped pastry commonly filled with sweet red bean or custard. Its shape does not mean it contains fish.
• Hotteok: griddled pancake often filled with melted brown sugar, seeds or nuts.
• Eomuk or odeng: fish cake on skewers, often beside a broth kettle.

Prices change by neighborhood, size and filling. Read the board rather than relying on an old video; several pieces may be priced as a set.

Pay without slowing the stall

1. Wait beside the order point, away from hot equipment.
2. Say the item and quantity or point clearly.
3. Ask card dwaeyo? before presenting a card.
4. Pay when directed and move to the eating side.
5. Return cups or skewers to the marked container.

Some vendors count skewers at the end. Complimentary broth is common at some stalls, not a guaranteed national rule.

Protect yourself and other customers

Steam, oil and syrup cause burns. Let hotteok cool, keep scarves away from flames and do not put bags on preparation counters. Seating is limited; finish promptly and use the vendor’s waste container rather than a nearby shop’s private bin.

Ask about hidden ingredients

Fish cake contains seafood and may share broth with shellfish. Hotteok can contain nuts, wheat and shared cooking oil; custard may include egg or dairy. Travelers with allergies should show a Korean allergy card and skip a stall when staff cannot confirm ingredients or cross-contact.
