No option is automatically best. Decide first whether you need only data, a callable Korean number, several connected devices, or your home number to remain active.
Three practical choices
- Data-only eSIM: no airport pickup or SIM swap, but it may provide no usable Korean voice number.
- Tourist eSIM with calls/SMS: can provide a 010 number, although passport or entry verification may be required before voice features work.
- Physical tourist SIM: useful for phones without eSIM and often easier to troubleshoot at an airport counter.
Your home carrier’s roaming is a fourth option. It preserves your usual number and reduces setup, but compare total price and data policy.
A portable Wi-Fi router can serve several devices without changing their SIMs. It also creates a separate battery, charging and return obligation, and the group loses connectivity when the router holder walks away. Compare the full rental period and pickup or return location rather than only the daily price.
Choose from the task that must work
- Maps, translation and messaging: data-only can be enough if app contacts do not need to call you.
- Restaurant, hotel or delivery callbacks: confirm a usable Korean voice number and whether incoming calls work after activation.
- Outgoing calls or SMS: check whether credit, recharge or passport verification is required; “calls included” can refer only to receiving.
- Korean account identity verification: ask the platform, not only the SIM seller. A tourist 010 number may still be ineligible.
- Multiple devices: check hotspot or tethering terms and speed policy instead of assuming unlimited phone data can be shared.
Do you need a Korean number?
Maps, translation, email, web reservations and app messages generally need data only. A local number can help when a restaurant, accommodation or delivery service needs to call. However, receiving a 010 number does not guarantee access to every Korean online identity-verification system. Confirm whether the product supplies only a contact number or also supports the specific verification task you need.
If a platform demands Korean identity verification rather than a contact number, another tourist SIM may not solve it. Look for a foreigner-friendly reservation path or contact the venue.
An ordinary SMS code only proves that you can receive a message. Some Korean services instead require subscriber information linked to an eligible Korean identity or residence record. Before buying a plan for one app, ask the app which authentication method it accepts and use its global or foreign-visitor route when available. Never enter another person's identity information.
Check the phone before paying
- Confirm the exact model supports eSIM—not just the model family.
- Make sure the device is carrier-unlocked.
- Check that an eSIM slot is available.
- Save the QR code somewhere other than the phone that must scan it.
- Read refund and deletion rules before installation.
Find the phone's model number and SIM-lock status in settings or through the home carrier before buying. Do not publish the EID, IMEI, activation QR or full purchase voucher. If the seller requests device identifiers through its official process, enter them only on the verified carrier domain or at its staffed counter.
When does the plan start?
“Day” can mean a calendar day, a 24-hour period, purchase, installation or first network connection. Read the product's current activation rule and avoid installing too early if the usage period begins immediately.
Separate four moments: purchase, profile installation, network activation and voice/SMS verification. They may occur on different days. Save the official instructions before flying and install only at the stage the provider recommends. A profile visible in settings does not prove the Korean network or phone number is active.
Keep the home SIM enabled only if you understand roaming charges. Set the travel line for cellular data, disable data switching, and turn off data roaming on the home line. Some travel eSIMs require roaming enabled on the travel line.
Keep a clean dual-SIM setup
Rename the lines “Home” and “Korea” before travel. Select the Korea line for cellular data, turn off automatic data switching and decide which line handles calls and messages. Disabling home-line data does not necessarily disable every roaming charge, so confirm voice and SMS behavior with the home carrier.
Keep the purchase email, activation code, APN instructions and support channel offline. Do not post the QR code or send it to an unofficial helper.
Understand “unlimited” before checkout
Compare the high-speed allowance, speed after that allowance, total validity, network generation and hotspot policy. A throttled connection may still handle messages but feel very different for video, large uploads or navigation shared across devices. Read whether the allowance resets by calendar day or a rolling period.
Do not choose solely from a speed badge. Coverage at a specific basement, mountain or rural destination can differ from general network claims, and no provider can guarantee every indoor location. Keep offline maps, accommodation details and an airport-to-hotel route as a first-day backup.
If data does not work
- Connect to trusted Wi-Fi and confirm that the eSIM profile is enabled.
- Select it as the cellular-data line and follow the provider's roaming setting.
- Check the APN against the official instructions.
- Toggle airplane mode or restart the phone once.
- Contact official support before deleting or reinstalling the profile.
If data works but calls or texts do not, check whether passport verification and any required voice recharge are complete. If the phone shows no network at all, record the device model, line status, error and location for support. Do not reset every network setting or erase the profile before the provider confirms that step.
Arrival checklist
- Connect to airport Wi-Fi before changing settings.
- Enable the purchased line and select it for mobile data.
- Follow the provider’s APN and roaming instructions.
- Test a map, browser and message before leaving the terminal.
- For calls/SMS, complete passport or entry verification.
