The designated-bag system

Korea uses a volume-based waste fee system: general (non-recyclable) trash must go into an official designated bag purchased locally -- usually available at nearby convenience stores or supermarkets -- rather than any generic bag. Bags are district-specific, so a bag bought in one area may not be valid in another. Recycling separation

• Subway and transit facilities: some concourses, transfer areas and station entrances provide separated bins, but availability varies by station. Do not cross a fare gate solely to dispose of waste.
• Convenience stores: use a store bin for waste from that store when one is provided. Ask staff before placing unrelated street waste in a private bin.
• Cafes and food courts: return a cup to the original business or use its marked tray-return and liquid-drain station. Empty liquid and separate lids or sleeves when labels request it.
